Asphalt
shingles : Wood shakes : Cement
and Clay
Cement and Clay products come in a
variety of shapes and designs. Typically, styles that resemble
either Spanish or Mediter ranean
are popular and come in a variety of colors. They are made in
both standard weight and lightweight constructs. Most light weight
tiles are between six and seven pounds per square foot; standard
weight tiles come in the range of nine to ten pounds per square
foot. The weight of the roofing material may be a very important
consideration when determining what product can be used. Most
tiles require a batten underneath for fastening purposes. Some
require a non-batten fastener to plywood or solid decking and
are a little less likely to break under walking loads or additional
pressures. The additional dead air space between the tile and
the roof deck caused by the batten can provide some insulating
factors to the application. However, this air space does not
provide any support for the tile and thus the application can
be prone to cracking when walked upon. Typically, tile products
are priced slightly less than quality wood shakes but higher
than composite asphalt shingles. They come in a variety of colors,
and some fading may occur over time. Tile installations consist
of approximately 10-15 % of the market.
